At the time of his death, he was serving his fifth term in office. He was also a one-time presidential candidate for the Green Party in 1988, but did not win the race. Marion Barry married his high school sweetheart, Delores Tucker, in 1962.
The couple had two daughters, including Deirdre Barry, who died in 2008 at age forty-three of liver cancer. Marion Barry's other daughter is Beverly Barry, who is a professor at Howard University and who sits on the board of directors of the Foundation for Excellence in Journalism.
